Intervention Support

Targeted, one-to-one instruction in reading, writing, or math, built from a real diagnostic, not a guess at where your child "probably" is.

  1. Real diagnostic first. Before anything is taught, we find out exactly where the breakdown is happening, not just whether a student is behind.
  2. One pattern at a time. Instruction is cumulative and sequential. We never skip ahead to "catch up." We stretch the pace instead, so nothing is built on a shaky foundation.
  3. Same reliable structure every session: warm-up, focused teaching, practice, and a wrap-up that names what was learned so your child always knows what to expect.
  4. Progress checked on a schedule, not a hunch: quick checks every session, a fuller check-in at the midpoint, and a full re-assessment at the end so growth is measured, not assumed.
Typical arc: a focused block of 30-45 minutes, several days a week, one student at a time, online.

What Spanish enrichment builds toward

Our Spanish program meets students where they are, whether new to the language, growing up bilingual, or heritage speakers polishing school Spanish. We work toward real, usable skills, such as:

  • Holding a conversation about their family in Spanish.
  • Telling a story about something that happened, using the past tense.
  • Writing a short narrative with connected ideas, not just a list of sentences.
  • Reading a short passage and identifying the main idea, not just the details.
Pace and progress vary by student. We build each plan around where your child is starting from. Culinary arts and other enrichment electives are available too. Ask us what's running this term.

Nuestro programa de español se adapta a cada estudiante, ya sea que sea nuevo en el idioma, esté creciendo bilingüe, o sea un hablante de herencia puliendo su español escolar. Trabajamos hacia habilidades reales y útiles, tales como:

Dr. Joe Cortez, Founder

Meet the Founder

Dr. Joe Salvador Cortez, Ed.L.D.

Founder & Lead Trainer, Lumina Learning Center

Dr. Cortez founded Lumina after more than a decade leading special education programs at the district, county, and school-site level, most recently as a Special Education Coordinator, and before that as a Principal and Assistant Principal, overseeing IEP compliance, staff coaching, and family partnerships across a dozen school sites at a time. He holds a Doctorate in Education Leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, a Master's in Special Education from CSU Dominguez Hills, and is bilingual in English and Spanish.

Every Lumina tutor is trained personally by Dr. Cortez, so the same standard of instruction, documentation, and family communication he built his career on is the standard every family gets here.
